The North West province is expected to administer the rollout of its first Johnson & Johnson (J&J) vaccine jabs in Klerksdorp in the Matlosana Local Municipality on Thursday.

At least 3 900 vaccines will be distributed after they were delivered to the province on Wednesday.

The province's Health MEC, Madoda Sambatha, says vaccines - only meant for healthcare workers - will be shared between the Klerksdorp/Tshepong Hospital and Job Shimankana Tabane Hospital.

The J&J vaccines were received by Premier Job Mokgoro, Sambatha and other dignitaries at the Job Shimankana Tabane Hospital.

Mokgoro is also expected to take a vaccine jab.

Yesterday the country administered the rollout of the vaccine in Khayelitsha in Cape Town. Later on, President Cyril Ramaphosa and Health Minister Zweli Mkhize also took the jabs making them the first high profile citizens to take the vaccine.

"Taking the vaccine was quick, easy and not so painful. I urge all our healthcare workers to register to receive their vaccinations as they are our first line of defence against the coronavirus pandemic," Ramaphosa said.

The first batch of 80 000 doses of the J&J vaccine arrived in the country on Tuesday night and is being prepared for distribution across South Africa.
