This is according to political analyst, Sethulego Matebesi.

He says looking at the recent events involving Magashule, there is a great chance that he might become the next president of the ANC.

Thousands of Magashule’s supporters on Friday gathered at the Hertzog Square in Charles Street, Bloemfontein, following his court appearance at the Bloemfontein Magistrate's Court on charges of corruption, amongst others.

Matebesi says Magashule is continuing to undermine and disregard the rules of the ANC.

“If one looks at how the former President, Jacob Zuma, became president by playing the victim and all that; and also if you just look at how easily the secretary-general can disregard the rules of the African National Congress with some of his public pronouncements, and absolute no action has been taken,” he adds.

Magashule and his co-accused will now stand trial at the Free State High Court set to commence on 11 August 2021. This, after the state requested that the matter be transferred to the High Court. 

Magashule and others are all charged with more than 70 counts of fraud, theft, attempted theft, corruption in contravention of the Prevention and Combating of Corrupt Activities Act and money-laundering, amongst others. 

They will be held accountable on charges of contravening various asbestos regulations, promulgated in terms of the Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993.
