A ceremony to celebrate top-performing Free State learners is set to get underway in Bloemfontein.

This, as the province has maintained the top position in matric results. The province achieved a pass rate of 85.1% for the class of 2020. Releasing results on Monday, Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga announced that the province has once again reclaimed its first position, followed by Gauteng at 83.3%, the Western Cape at 79%, and KZN at 77.6%. Three districts from the province have also made the top 10-cut countrywide, with Fezile Dabi District, Thabo Mofutsayana District and Motheo District leading the pack.

The Free State Department of Education is this morning expected to celebrate this victory at the University of the Free State's south campus under strict Covid-19 regulations. Departmental spokesperson, Howard Ndaba, said in adherence to Covid-19 guidelines, most districts and schools will join the ceremony virtually.

Meanwhile, the MEC for Education, Tate Makgoe, has taken to his social media pages to express his pride in the class of 2020 and how the province has performed.

"Since the advent of the NSC in 2008, the FS has been number one for 5 times in the last 8 years," said Makgoe.
