Over 3000 victims of #GBV supported in FS | News Article

At least 3,811 victims of gender-based violence (GBV) were provided with psychosocial support with 167 women admitted to the safe house and five shelters.

This as the femicide scourge continues to raise its ugly head in the province and across the country. The Free State premier, Sisi Ntombela, says to curb the scourge of GBV in the province, District Coordinators have been appointed across five districts in the province. She says the multi-sectoral Gender-Based Violence and Femicide Technical Committee has also been created.

In total, "R17 653 000 will be used for prevention of violence against women and children in the coming financial year,” she adds.

Ntombela has lambasted acts of violence against women and says they continue to be troubled by violence against women, girls and children. She says the act is shameful.

“Women are no less human. No society that respects itself treats its women with disrespect. This is a human rights tragedy. Violence against women needs to stop. We should not only speak about ending gender-based violence, we should end it. We need to act and act now. Human rights and gender equality must be at the heart of our efforts to end this scourge,” she adds.

Meanwhile, R3 413 000 have been allocated for the maintenance and improvement of services for women shelters dealing with all kinds of violence against women. In November 2020, the ANC Women’s League (ANCWL) picketed outside the Bloemfontein High Court and urged Deputy Judge President (DJP), Johan Daffue, and demanded justice against perpetrators of GBV.
