The Auditor-General briefing the Standing Committee on Public Accounts and Finance said there is a high need for intervention in this municipality. 

The committee, led by the Chief Whip of the Free State Legislature, Vusi Tshabalala, on Wednesday heard how this municipality lacks financial controls and sound leadership. The municipality has come under heavy criticism for poor governance and high vacancy rates with the opposition questioning the position of the Municipal Manager who has been placed on special leave following allegations of corruption. 

Considering the municipality’s annual financial statements for the 2018/19 financial year to date, the head of the AG in the Free State, Luthando Mbandazayo, highlighted how the municipality is regressing into a deeper financial rut.  

The DA’s David van Vuuren and the EFF’s Mahlomola Majake says the municipality, which serves the community of Kroonstad and Steynsrus, amongst others, must account for their financial woes and reasons as to why communities suffer from poor services.
