The University of the Free State (UFS) Rector and Vice-Chancellor, Francis Petersen, has ordered an investigation into an alleged altercation between security guards and students at the Bloemfontein campus.

He says no formal incidents were reported at the university's protection services.

This comes amidst the protest by students against financial exclusion and registration difficulties at the university. He says he has not yet received any feedback into the investigation, and therefore is unable to confirm if the incident took place or not.

However, Petersen has explained that those not funded by the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS), who have debt of more than R20 000 will be expected to at least reduce the debt.

"With respect to the financial question in relation to the R20 000 threshold, I just want to emphasise again where there are NSFAS students and NSFAS has confirmed funding for 2021 even if you have the historical debt you are allowed to register where we have non-NSFAS students and you have debt of more than R20 000, you will have to bring that debt down to R20 000," he adds.

On Thursday, EFF Student Command spokesperson, Tebogo Legodi, told OFM News that 10 students were shot at by the police. It was alleged by some students that a female student was critical in hospital after the attack by these security guards.
