Their arrest comes as the residents in that area continue to protest against water shortages.

Police spokesperson, Motantsi Makhele, says the streets were barricaded with burning tyres, large stones and refuse. He says during the protest several foreign national owned shops were looted.

Makhele adds two of the suspects were arrested for public violence while five of them were arrested for possession of suspected stolen goods after the shops were looted.

The Matjhabeng Local Municipality is yet to respond to OFM News' inquiry.

“A case of Malicious Damage of Property was also registered. The situation is currently under control as members of POP are closely visible and monitoring,” he adds.

Makhele does, however, not indicate as to when the suspects will appear in court, or if they have already made their first court appearance.
