The incident took place amidst student protests against financial exclusion and registration difficulties at the UFS. The video, taken by students on Monday, shows security guards at the campus dragging EFFSC spokesperson, Tebogo Legodi, out of the campus gate.

The incident comes a few days after the university's Rector and Vice-Chancellor, Francis Petersen, said an investigation into an earlier alleged assault of students by security guards was ongoing. Legodi, in pictures taken after the incidents, is shown to have suffered a minor injury on his hand and also sustained a bruise behind his ear. UFS is yet to comment on the OFM News inquiry.

On Thursday 11 March 2021, following the arrest of 25 UFS students, Legodi told OFM News that 10 students were shot at by the police. It was further alleged by some students that a female student was critical in hospital after an attack by these security guards.
