NW municipality engulfed by acts of criminality - VIDEO─── LUCKY NKUYANE 08:19 Thu, 18 Mar 2021
Acts of criminality continue to play out at the Klerksdorp-based Matlosana Local Municipality in the North West.
A video of a scuffle between security guards and an irate group of residents who stormed the precinct of the municipality is doing the rounds on social media.
According to the spokesperson of the mayor, Nick Mapheelle, they are sometimes told these groups of individuals want the troika members - which in this case include the mayor Maetu Kgaile and speaker Washington Ntonzini - to step down. He says the spate of such incidents is a concern to the municipality, with no less than five incidents that occurred in the past few months. Mapheelle says in some instances workers were threatened and intimidated by these groups of individuals.
“There is a group of people, seven or ten of them, who came and started shouting outside the municipal building, instructing employees to move out of the building. So the security personnel acted upon them and they tried to remove them. There was a scuffle that unfolded between that group of people and the security personnel and in the process, some of them were [allegedly] assaulted,” he adds.
"A few weeks ago another group of people also stormed the premises of the municipality and threatened employees. This group is said to have allegedly demanded that they be given tenders.
"They say the municipal manager must resign and the troika members must also resign. On the other hand, sometimes we are told about the tenders that they are looking for tenders from the municipality. Apparently, they have recently handed a memorandum to the office of the municipal manager,” Mapheelle adds.
Meanwhile, the ANC’s Interim Provincial Working Committee (IPWC) in the North West recently reacted with anger to the recent violence and burning of private property in Jouberton near Klerksdorp.
The ANC IPWC Coordinator, Hlomani Chauke, urged residents to fully cooperate with law enforcement agencies in their ongoing investigations to ensure that the individuals behind these violent attacks face the full might of the law.
