At least 5 000 people in the North West are suffering from drug-susceptible and drug-resistant tuberculosis (TB).

According to the Health MEC, Madoda Sambatha, at least 5 187 patients are recuperating, with the highest-burden districts being Bojanala Platinum, which includes Rustenburg, and Dr Kenneth Kaunda, which includes Klerksdorp in the Local Municipality of Matlosana.

Sambatha says this is as a result of people who find more job opportunities, mainly at the mines in these two areas. This is ahead of the World TB Day commemoration event in the Greater Taung Local Municipality in the Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District. The commemoration will be led by the premier, Job Mokgoro, who will be accompanied by MEC Sambatha, Tribal Authorities, Civil Society Leaders and Members of the Provincial AIDS Council.

“The World Tuberculosis Day is commemorated annually on 24 March, and will this year it will be hosted under strict COVID-19 regulations, under the theme 'The clock is ticking: Let's find, treat and end TB now'.

"The province is working in collaboration with stakeholders like traditional healers, traditional leaders, faith-based organisations and community organisations to tackle HIV/AIDS and TB,” he adds. He says there are ongoing efforts by the Provincial AIDS Council which is set at achieving more in the fight against TB.
