Shacks destroyed in Bethlehem─── 16:20 Tue, 23 Mar 2021
At least two shacks were destroyed in Vogelfontein, Bethlehem in the Free State, when the Dihlabeng Local Municipality sent in teams to demolish what they deemed illegal structures.
Ownership of the land, where residents set up structures, has been under despite.
Speaking to OFM News about this matter, EFF chief whip, Mohloki Mthombeni, said the land doesn't belong to the municipality, hence they advised the residents to occupy it. He further said even the municipality has agreed that the land belongs to a private company.
Mthombeni says it is thus questionable why the municipality is destroying shacks built on land that doesn't belong to them, and in terms of the Covid-19 regulations, no-one is allowed to evict people from where they stay.
Municipal spokesperson, Tshediso Maitse, said earlier that even though the land doesn't belong to the municipality, no one is supposed to stay there because there is no infrastructure to deliver municipal services.
