UPDATE: More arrests made in fraud case at NC municipality─── LUCKY NKUYANE 10:41 Thu, 25 Mar 2021
The number of suspects arrested in the Northern Cape for defrauding the Kimberley-based Sol Plaatje municipality has now risen to nine.
This after the Hawks arrested an additional three suspects allegedly linked to the fraud of approximately R1,6 million. The Hawks provincial spokesperson, Nomthandazo Mnisi, says the trio was arrested on Thursday morning.
The suspects now join the other six who were nabbed in Kuruman and Kimberley on Wednesday. Mnisi says all nine of them are expected to appear in the Kimberley Magistrate’s Court on Thursday. It’s alleged that between 2011 and 2016, ghost workers were created in the Sol Plaatje Municipality's database and during the alleged crime, various bank accounts were used to transfer money from Sol Plaatje’s bank account, amounting to the said R1,6 million.
UPDATE: The suspects' formal bail applications have been postponed to Friday 26 March 2021.
