#FSbudget: All eyes on Arts and Culture | News Article

All eyes will this week be on the Free State MEC for Arts, Culture and Recreation, Limakatso Mahasa.

This, as she is expected to table the department’s 2021/22 budget.

Mahasa’s much awaited speech will come amidst growing tension in Bloemfontein over concerns raised by artists.

Groups of artists calling for Premier Sisi Ntombela and Minister Nathi Mthethwa’s intervention, have for weeks made headlines following their sit-in at the Performing Arts Centre of the Free State (Pacofs).

They are calling for the axing of acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Meshack Xaba.

The group, which also picketed outside Ntombela’s house this weekend, alleges the plight faced by artists in the province has for years been ignored and they further accuse Xaba of maladministration and favouritism, among other alleged wrongdoings.

Speaking on behalf of the group, the provincial coordinator of the Cultural and Creative Industries Federation of South Africa (CCIFSA) in the Free State, Mbuyiselo Nqodi, told OFM News they are determined that Mthethwa must come address them.

Meanwhile, Mahasa will on Tuesday be expected to outline plans for her department’s R638 million budget, how they plan to support creatives amidst the Covid-19 pandemic, as well as address questions relating to the popular Macufe festival.
