ANC FS branches to decide on Magashule’s future | News Article

ANC Free State branches are expected to make their decision on the ANC step-aside policy involving the embattled ANC Secretary-General (SG) Ace Magashule known on Monday.

Leaders of ANC regions, including Lejweleputswa, Thabo Mofuthsanyana, Fezile Dabi, Motheo and Xhariep, are meeting on Monday to discuss the future of Magashule following talks that there are plans to axe the latter.

Earlier the ANC National Executive Committee (NEC) said the decision was sent to branches to deal with it. This after the party was heavily divided on this policy following calls that Magashule should step aside amidst his corruption case in the High Court in Bloemfontein.

Meanwhile, in a media statement, the ANC Fezile Dabi Region said ANC branches in the region sent out letters to the office of Magashule to raise their concerns regarding the alleged ongoing plot to unsettle his office through what he terms the divisive stand of step aside resolution.

The region's spokesperson, Gadliz Magadlela, says “we are here as the region to reiterate their stance to say this matter must be referred to the National General Council or a special conference where branch delegates will further deliberate on this matter. We are also dismayed with the fact that for the first time that a matter has not been resolved on by the NEC, and that is also the first time that a matter be voted on before even deliberated on”.

In February, a group of ANC members in the Free State, calling itself the Radical Economic Transformation (RET) Forces, pledged its support to both Magashule and former president Jacob Zuma. Speaking on behalf of the group, Malefu Mofokeng said they believe the charges against Magashule are politically motivated. Mofokeng said they are not ashamed to voice their support for Magashule.

In October 2020, Mofokeng told OFM News that state resources are being used to wage psychological warfare against people perceived to be close allies of Magashule. She said people are trying, by all means, to nab the former Free State premier and current ANC SG.

Magashule previously informed his supporters after his court appearance in Bloemfontein that only branches had powers to recall him from his position.
