The Free State Human Settlements Department is committed to ensuring more title deeds are provided to residents and housing backlogs are addressed.

This is according to MEC Tshidi Koloi. Responding to concerns raised by opposition parties over the department’s R1,2 billion tabled for the 2021/22, Koloi said they will be focusing on ensuring that residents are provided with title deeds and that those in informal settlements are moved to more developed areas.

She says 2 044 sites will be provided to residents in Koppies alone where she delivered her department’s budget. Koloi, also serving as the MEC of Public Works and Infrastructure, has further committed to ensuring that there is infrastructure development in the province and that local communities will benefit.

Responding to questions over alleged poor standards of houses built in the province, Koloi highlighted how her department adheres to the highest building norms and standards and how they are also attending to incomplete houses with 836 houses now standing complete, despite challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic.

OFM News earlier reported on how the department was criticised heavily with opposition parties claiming it is shrouded by a dark cloud involving the failed asbestos project where R255 million remains unaccounted for.

The Freedom Front Plus’ Devar Smit, the EFF’s Mahlomola Majeke, and the DA’s Leona Kleynhans said the department is failing to prioritise residents and should deal with corruption allegations they are implicated in, including high irregular expenditure recorded in the Auditor-General report.
