Police react to alleged Marikana shooting | News Article

The North West police are yet to receive any complaint in relation to the alleged shooting which is said to have occurred in the mining town of Marikana near Rustenburg on Wednesday.

Police spokesperson, Sabata Mokgwabone, says the police have made several strides to uncover who the victims of the shooting are but no one has come forth with any details of such an incident. He says the alleged shooting incident follows an alleged altercation between residents and people believed to be miners after the residents allegedly barricaded the road.

He says according to the information, residents alleged that these people believed to be miners, shot at them and as a result, some of the protesting residents were shot and injured. Mokgwabone says the police went as far as contacting an individual who allegedly reported the incident on social media but this individual refused to give further information on the shooting incident.

Mokgwabone adds that the police are neither investigating a case of murder, assault, or anything related to the incident. He adds that that is the only cases the police received that relates to the damage of property. Mokgwabone further adds that the three cases of damage to property were reported by motorists who complained about their cars being pelted with rocks during the protests in that area. He refused to comment further on the shooting and said to date no one has opened a case.
