Situation calm in Winburg and Theunissen─── 09:13 Tue, 27 Apr 2021
According to Free State police spokesperson, Motantsi Makhele, the situation is now calm following protests in Theunissen and Winburg.
Makhele tells OFM News that the N1 is again open for traffic, which is now also freely flowing on the R30.
The situation on the R30 however got out of hand last night, as protestors threw stones at passing motor vehicles.
Makhele says the situation was contained after 23:00, thanks to the enforcement of the Public Order Police (POP).
“The Public order police Unit was deployed to the area to keep an eye on the situation,” says Makhele.
“Presently the situation is tense, but calm. We request the community to stay vigilant and calm, as the police deployments are in the area to ensure there is no further havoc at the moment," he adds.
A number of vehicles (number to be confirmed), were damaged in the process.
“One Corsa bakkie was also set alight. No reports of serious injuries were reported at this stage,” Makhele says.
