#GBV: Murderer sentenced, rape suspect charged in Central SA─── 15:44 Wed, 05 May 2021
A 41-year-old man was sentenced to life imprisonment on charges of murder and rape, and received an additional 15 years for robbery and 5 years for fraud.
Akanyang Rakodi’s sentence follows his appearance in the North West High Court in Mogwase on Wednesday. According to the provincial spokesperson, Sabata Mokwabone, Rakodi made his first appearance in the Mogwase Magistrate's Court in July 2020 for the murder of a teacher, Khumontle Mokgosi.
“During the arrest, the suspect was found in possession of the deceased’s bank card, clothes, car battery, and liquor. The investigative team further recovered Mokgosi’s two cell phones. It also came out during the investigation that the young teacher’s bank card was used to withdraw cash from ATMs in Northam and Zeerust,” Mokwabone says.
In a statement, Mokwabone says Mokgosi's body was found in June 2020 at her residence in the Magong Village near Mogwase, North West, by neighbours and members of the School Governing Body (SGB) who conducted a search after the young teacher failed to report for duty. The victim’s body was found with hands and feet tied.
In another incident in Central South Africa, a 26-year-old male was arrested in Galeshewe, Northern Cape, on charges of rape. According to Northern Cape police spokesperson, Sergio Kock, police received information of rape that allegedly took place over the weekend, in Galeshewe.
“The information was operationalised and the fleeing suspect was arrested [on Wednesday]. The 26-year-old male suspect fled from his house in Galeshewe and lived under the disguise of a street vagrant in the Kimberley CBD. The investigative skills of the tracking team led to the swift apprehension and arrest of the suspect at a petrol station. The suspect will be appearing on a charge of rape in the Galeshewe Magistrate's Court soon,” Kock says.
