Former Free State ANC PEC member, Pat Matosa, said he was the first ANC member to ever be recalled by the party.

He said - in reaction to the step-aside debacle – that he was recalled by the ANC in 1999. At the time he was a member of the Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) in the Free State and served as a member of the National Assembly.

Matosa said he was facing charges of attempted murder in court. He said he never complained or considered to take the matter to court. This was years before the step-aside resolutions were taken at the 2017 Nasrec Conference. ANC Secretary-General, Ace Magashule, who received a notice of suspension in terms of this resolution, served with Matosa on this PEC.

The ANC's National Working Committee (NWC) has also announced another intervention to address the infighting in the ANC in the Free State. It appointed a team, led by former president Kgalema Motlanthe, to mediate between the different factions whose court bids are currently rocking the party in the province.

Reacting to this move, Matosa says factionalism in the Free State ANC is an age-old problem despite several interventions by Luthuli House over the years. This decision followed the filing of an application to appeal a judgment by the Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) that has set aside and declared the ANC’s Provincial Elective Conference, which was held in May 2018, unconstitutional and unlawful. Unconfirmed indications are that an appeal to the Constitutional Court, to appeal this SCA ruling, has since been withdrawn.

The elective conference in 2018 is where Free State Roads and Transport MEC, Sam Mashinini, was elected as the chairperson of the party in the province and Agriculture MEC William Bulwane as his deputy.

Matosa says both factions are wrong as they are all fighting for their own interests and not that of the party or what it stands for.
