Mixed views held over Ratselane case─── 15:17 Tue, 11 May 2021
The political parties who picketed outside the Bloemfontein Regional Court on Tuesday during the appearance of McKenzie Ratselane, who are accused of stabbing his wife, Dimakatso Ratselane, have expressed mixed views about the case.
The EFF provincial chairperson, Mandisa Makesini, has expressed satisfaction with the postponement and she says this grants the state enough time to make sure the accused receives a harsher punishment for stabbing the SABC presenter. She says the party had an opportunity to divulge some of the issues with the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) and they were happy with the feedback from the unit. Makesini says they were informed that the state is still probing the gun that was confiscated from McKenzie's possession to determine if the weapon was previously used in any other crimes or not. However, the Mangaung ANC Women's League's (ANCWL) regional secretary, Nobanele Mkrola, says the party is not happy with how the case has been handled.
The two parties shared the platform and sang side by side with one another in support of Dimakatso who was brutally attacked and stabbed by her husband in February in Bloemfontein. They want McKenzie to receive a harsher sentence for the crimes the latter is facing in court. He is accused of attempted murder, kidnapping, assault, the illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.
Ratselane's new legal counsel on Tuesday informed the Regional Court that he wants to plead guilty to charges of assault, kidnapping, the illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition, and not to that of attempted murder.
They argued that if McKenzie wanted to kill Dimakatso, he could have done so as he had a firearm in his vehicle when he stabbed her multiple times with a knife in Bloemfontein in February. The latter was expected to plead. His case was yet again postponed to Wednesday 19 May 2021 to allow time for negotiations between the two parties.
