The husband of a Bloemfontein-based nurse, Marlie Rautenbach, who gave birth to their baby boy after prematurely going into labour at 35 weeks, whilst being on duty on Friday, says it is amazing how nurses give so much of themselves to serve others.

Thousands of South Africans are on Wednesday paying tribute to nurses as the world celebrates International Nurses Day 2021.

The Covid-19 pandemic has also brought several challenges to the healthcare system with nurses and other health professionals having been at the coalface of the job at hand.

The Democratic Nursing Organisation of South Africa (Denosa) in the North West tells OFM News the mental health of nurses has been challenged and their resilience tested, as they continue facing various challenges, including the lack of resources.

Denosa's North West Provincial Secretary, Kedibone Mdolo, says nurses are unsung heroes who keep working hard to serve communities despite the challenges they are plagued with. She says this day is of high importance to all nurses and she urges the public to recognise their efforts.

Mdolo adds that hundreds of nurses have been infected with Covid-19 while others have lost their lives in the line of duty since the outbreak of the pandemic and she would like to give thanks to all those who continue to risk their lives to serve the country.
