#MangaungShutdown: Security guard arrested after teen's death─── LUCKY NKUYANE 13:39 Mon, 17 May 2021
The Free State police have arrested a 57-year-old security guard for allegedly shooting a teenage boy on Monday during the protests in Mangaung.
Police spokesperson, Motantsi Makhele, says the security guard is alleged to have fired a shot at a group of people and in the process, a 15-year-old boy was hit and died at the scene.
He says it's alleged that a group of protesters, during the protests rocking parts of Mangaung Monday morning, went to enter a warehouse in Dr Belcher Road, Bloemfontein. Makhele says the suspect, who now faces charges of murder, fired a shot in an attempt to scare the mob. Unfortunately, a 15-year-old boy died at the scene.
Videos and photos of the incident are doing the rounds on social media. Irate Mangaung residents are protesting about the lack of better and quality services and closed off different roads leading out of the township. Residents used burning tyres, stones, debris, and different objects to close off these roads. At least seven residents have been arrested by the police for public violence and they are set to appear in court within 48 hours.
Makhele says the police are closely monitoring the situation, which is still tense.
