#Mangaung MM faces possible axing─── LUCKY NKUYANE 07:22 Thu, 20 May 2021
Trouble mounts for the under-fire Bloemfontein-based Mangaung Metro Municipality's Manager, Tankiso Mea.
This as the embattled Mea faces yet another motion of no confidence in the city's council on Thursday following shutdown protests in parts of Bloemfontein by disgruntled residents.
According to the DA's Dirk Kotze, Mea has failed to carry out his duties as the Municipal Manager with due diligence by, amongst others, failing to collect traffic fines and forcing the metro to part with R18 million due to non-collections from 2016.
Mea is facing his third motion of no confidence after surviving the previous ones with the ANC in council using its majority to vote.
OFM News previously reported that the council voted to appoint a team of investigators to scrutinise alleged misconduct and maladministration against Mea. ANC chief whip, Zolile Mangcotywa, previously told OFM News that the party did not want to put its cart before the horse or jump the gun by suspending Mea.
According to Kotze, on 9 February the DA requested the Metro's Executive Mayor, Lebohang Masaoetsa, to investigate maladministration against the City Manager.
"The process for disciplinary action must be tabled within seven days of receiving the allegations. Due to several delays from the Executive Mayor and the Speaker, the allegations were only tabled in council on 30 March.
"The council then approved the recommendation from the DA that independent investigators be appointed to investigate the allegations. Advocate Manye SC and Advocate Johan Nell SC were appointed by Moroka attorneys. The report needs to be submitted within 30 days of their appointment but due to delays from the metro's side, the investigators requested an extension for their investigation," he adds.
Mea has previously faced a slew of protest action from different concerned members of the community and different organisations.
Members of the Congress of the South African Trade Unions (COSATU), SA National Civic Organisation (Sanco), and South African Municipal Workers Union previously warned to shut down the metro following a march against Mea.
