Sisulu to address #WaterCrisis issues─── KATLEHO MORAPELA 08:33 Sat, 22 May 2021
The water crisis experienced in many parts of the country - including the troubled Maluti-A-Phofung Municipality in the Free State - will next week come under scrutiny.
This, as Water and Sanitation Minister Lindiwe Sisulu is expected to table her department’s budget.
Sisulu in 2020 - at the height of service delivery protests that brought Qwaqwa to a standstill - allocated more than R220 million to address water challenges in the area.
To date, large parts of Maluti-A-Phofung still experiences water challenges, including inadequate sanitation.
Sisulu’s much anticipated budget is also expected to address questions over poor sanitation.
According to the latest Non-Financial Census of Municipalities, the Free State - together with the Northern Cape, North West and the Eastern Cape - has recorded an increase of pit latrine users.
The survey, released earlier this year, indicates that 37 out of 257 municipalities has provided bucket toilets to residents - with most of them being those in the Free State.
The survey further indicates that the Free State’s Setsoto, Nala, Nketoana, Ngwathe and Metsimaholo Municipalities are ranked among the top ten municipalities countrywide with inadequate sanitation.
Sisulu, will table the department’s budget on Tuesday.
