The R59 cleared for motorists─── 10:49 Sat, 22 May 2021
Gauteng police have confirmed a housing protest on the R59, connecting Vereeniging and Johannesburg, has ended.
However, protesters reportedly barricaded the road when police left the scene.
Provincial police spokesperson, Mavela Masondo, tells OFM News police officers have been deployed to the area to monitor the situation - which he says is on and off.
The violent protest action reportedly resulted in vehicles being pelted with stones by the angry residents.
The protest has been ongoing for a week now, however, no arrests have been confirmed by the police.
Meanwhile, the Midvaal Local Municipality condemned the violent protest.
It has also proactively undertaken investigations and studies to find suitable land to provide affected residents with decent housing, access to water, sanitation and electricity.
The municipality emphasised land has been identified for development.
