Mangaung protest leaders to engage communities─── KATLEHO MORAPELA 11:34 Mon, 24 May 2021
Mangaung Shutdown organisers say they will be meeting again on Tuesday and engage communities on Wednesday regarding the plan of action.
One of the organisers, Themba Zweli, tells OFM News they have not completely called off the service delivery protests, contrary to media reports.
He says they have suspended them whilst they study the report received following a meeting with the provincial government - led by Premier Sisi Ntombela and Cooperative Governance MEC Thembeni Nxangisa.
Zweli says they will be meeting to further discuss whether their grievances have been addressed or not by the government and then chart a way forward. The leaders remain steadfast in their call for improved service delivery, access to job opportunities, and sound management at the municipality, amongst other demands.
The protests, led by the group referring to themselves as the Mangaung Community Concern, brought the city to a standstill at the beginning of the week last week.
The 14-year-old Liam Siegel died during the service delivery protests. He was allegedly shot and killed by a 57-year-old security guard who fired a shot in an attempt to scare off a group of protesters.
Siegel is expected to be laid to rest this coming weekend.
