Cogta MEC promises answers to Wepener residents after protests | News Article

The Free State MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta), Thembeni Nxangisa, has promised answers on 10 June 2021 after receiving a memorandum from Wepener residents on Monday.

The Qibing community recently had a service delivery protest and they are hoping to receive a positive response following the memorandum given to the MEC on Monday. According to police spokesperson, Motantsi Makhele, no arrests were made during the protests.

Service delivery issues were mentioned among their grievances, and also a local clinic that is not operating during weekends. The community pleaded for the clinic to operate around the clock, as they believe that this will also enhance job creation within the area.

Unemployment is also a major concern and they claim that this is caused by the lack of youth development programmes. Residents have requested a youth development center within the area, as they also believe that it will remove their children from the streets. The community also reiterated the importance of sports and recreation in every community. In the memorandum they also stated that access to sports and recreational areas has been a huge problem, citing that a park built recently is not up to the expected standard.

In the media release sent on FS Cogta's Facebook page, Nxangisa said that he is satisfied to see the community taking the initiative to address unemployment by generating ideas for job creation within the area, especially with an unemployment rate of 68% in the Free State. He has promised that he will ensure that Cogta will develop good relations with communities within the Free State.
