Mokgoro slams Mahikeng unrest─── OLEBOGENG MOTSE 15:11 Tue, 25 May 2021
North West Premier, Job Mokgoro, condemns unrest in the provincial capital, Mahikeng, after protesters disrupted traffic on Monday 24 May.
Mokgoro acknowledges that citizens have a right to express their discontentment over service delivery via protest action, but should do so without infringing upon the rights of other citizens. According to Mokgoro, Dihatshwane village located along the R503 road between Mahikeng and Lichtenburg, as well as the N18 road between the capital and Vryburg near Kedirile Inn and Makhubung Village, were the hotspots of the unrest on Monday. The situation is reportedly calm as law enforcement was able to disperse the angry crowds in the aforementioned areas. A 30-year-old man was arrested for public violence and is expected to appear soon before the Molopo Magistrate's Court in Mmabatho.
Mokgoro has echoed the sentiments of North West police appealing to communities to ignore messages making rounds on social media encouraging them to embark on what is termed “Total Shutdown of Mahikeng”. Police spokesperson in the province, Sabata Mokgwabone, warned that no lawlessness will be tolerated and revealed they are closely monitoring the situation.
His statement comes just days after the neighbouring Free State’s Mangaung Metro was engulfed by protest actions, which claimed the life of a 14-year-old boy Liam Siegel.
