NW municipality under scrutiny again─── KATLEHO MORAPELA 06:44 Thu, 27 May 2021
The troubled Madibeng Local Municipality in the North West is under scrutiny again.
This, as communities demand the removal of its Executive Mayor.
In a placard making rounds on social media, communities are threatening to embark on service delivery protests and shut down the municipality by next week, should their demands not be met.
Demands include improved municipal services, an end to nepotism, and the resignation of the mayor amidst corruption allegations.
The municipality serving the communities of Brits and the popular tourist area of Hartbeespoort has for years drawn controversy over its failure to provide adequate services.
The Auditor-General has in the latest local government report indicated how it has been crippled by its investment in the now liquidated VBS Mutual Bank, and how it still grapples with the lack of sound management and financial controls.
The municipality is one of four North West municipalities that collectively invested more than R314 million of taxpayers’ money with the bank. It alone invested R31 million of its conditional grant.
