Furious residents of Qwaqwa in the Free State say enough is enough. They have barricaded several roads with burning tyres and stones since the early hours of Thursday morning.

This follows what they call the failure of the local municipality of Maluti-A-Phofung. They call for the intervention of president Cyril Ramaphosa.

According to the residents, electricity cut-off is a sign that the municipality doesn't consider them. Speaking to OFM News earlier today, they said they hope no one will stop them from protesting for their rights.

They are upset with their leaders who appear to not be interested in solving their service delivery problems. They also intended to strengthen their actions and do a total shutdown, which was started earlier this week by Harrismith residents who are also part of the same municipality.

Ditabe Nhlapo, the infrastructure MMC, said transformers should have arrived on Thursday, according to the service provider. He said they will be put to use immediately when they arrive.

He further said the challenge they are encountering as the municipality is that most of the roads are barricaded and this ties their hands when they want to go and attend to power stations around the various areas.

The Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) MEC, Thembeni Nxangisa, is expected to address the residents of Harrismith on Thursday afternoon.
