The acting Provincial Police Commissioner of the Northern Cape Johan Bean is pleased with the 20-years jail time that was handed to the rapist.

According to the provincial Communication Officer, Mashay Gamaldien, the 19-year-old suspect appeared before the Northern Cape Carnarvon Regional Court on Wednesday 2 June 2021, where he was sentenced to 20 years imprisonment for raping his half-sister who is only seven years old. “This comes as we are commemorating Child Protection Week, where it is in our hands to stop the cycle of abuse, violence, and exploitation of our children,” said Gamaldien.

The accused has been in custody since he was arrested on 2 February 2021 following the rape incident which took place in Vosburg on 1 February 2021. The incident was reported to the police by the sister of the seven-year-old victim. The accused was declared unfit to hold a firearm and his name has been recorded on the national sex offenders register.
