Theunissen residents call off protests─── 15:21 Fri, 04 Jun 2021
The Masilonyana community has called off a planned protest following lengthy discussions that took place between residents’ leaders and the Free State MEC of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) on Thursday.
Masilonyana and Makeleketla community leaders held a meeting on Thursday, which was attended by the MEC of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta), Thembeni Nxangisa, together with the Free State Finance MEC, Gadija Brown, and the Chairperson of Chairpersons, Mojalefa Patrick Buti. The meeting was held to address the issues of Makeleketla, together with Masilonyana residents.
Representatives of both municipalities put forth their grievances, which included transparency and accountability from the side of the municipality. Service delivery was one of their main problems, as they believe that every community member must be taken into account with regards to service delivery.
“Everything we say or do must be for the people. Dealing with community issues is a priority at this point, and everything done should be beneficial for the people,” said Nxangisa. He said that interaction between the community and municipality must be prioritised, as he was aware that residents are in the dark about things.
He further stated that they will monitor the demands and evaluate the progress of the demands of Masilonyana. Nxangisa also suggested that a team, which includes the Provincial Public Participation Unit from Cogta, Municipal Manager, business and community leaders must be established and meet on weekly basis.
