The state of municipalities in the North West is worrisome and needs continuous intervention.

This is according to the Chairperson of the Ad Hoc Committee on Section 100 intervention in the North West, China Dodovu. Addressing an engagement between parliament and the provincial government, Dodovu said municipalities in the province have failed to produce clean audit outcomes and are still plagued by several challenges.

He highlighted that these include poor service delivery to communities, lack of governance, and inability to generate revenue. Dodovu added that they will during the course of the day expect the provincial Cooperative Governance Department (Cogta) to account for their role and explain how they plan to assist municipalities. The sitting, chaired by Dodovu, comes just weeks after service delivery protests broke out in the province’s capital city and neighbouring towns. Residents in Mahikeng and Madibeng Local Municipality expressed their dissatisfaction over the lack of sustainable water supply, lack of job opportunities, and corruption in municipalities.

“The reason why we picked up Cogta is because of the state of municipalities in the North West. It has a profound impact on the state of municipalities in the province. It is in that context that we feel they need to come and account. We also need to find out what is it that the provincial government is doing to address the issue of municipalities,” said Dodovu.

He added that the situation in the province is dire with most of the municipalities still under administration, but grappling to provide services.
