Centlec board to discuss 'illegal salary increment'─── LUCKY NKUYANE 12:11 Wed, 09 Jun 2021
The Mangaung Metro Municipality’s power utility Centlec’s board is set to meet later this month to discuss allegations of an illegal salary increment by its Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Malefane Sebokwana.
Centlec spokesperson, Lele Mamatu, says the matter is currently with the board, which will only be meeting on 15 June 2021 to discuss the whole issue. Mamatu says the board will also discuss issues including the legal implications of the unauthorised information leaked to the media and the consequences thereof.
OFM News previously reported that DA member of the Municipal Council, Mokgadi Kganakga, revealed in her speech that Sebokwana increased his annual salary to R2.4 million, despite a directive from the Minister of Finance and Treasury, Tito Mboweni, proposing “moderate adjustments” to wage increases way below inflation for the upcoming financial years.
In her speech during a council sitting, Kganakga said Sebokwana increased his salary in April 2021 to R2.4 million per annum, which is much higher than his predecessors.
Mokgadi further alleges that Centlec has suffered a loss of R5 277 086 in the current financial year. She said this loss cannot be attributed to the effects of Covid-19 but can only be blamed on what she terms “the gravy train in the form of salary increases”.
