Man nabbed with cigarettes worth millions due in NW court─── KATLEHO MORAPELA 08:45 Sun, 13 Jun 2021
A 53-year-old man, arrested in possession of illicit cigarettes worth over R4.8 million in the North West, is expected to appear in court this week.
Petrus Toppies was arrested on Tuesday 8 June at the Kopfontein Port of Entry following a search operation by the police.
Police spokesperson, Sam Tselanyane, says the 53-year-old initially said he was transporting liquid molasses for cows, but upon investigation, it was discovered that there was also 355 master cases of Pacific Blue cigarettes.
He confirms the driver was immediately arrested and the liquid molasses were drained out as it is not suitable for use in South Africa.
Tselanyane says the truck and cigarettes were confiscated. The suspect is expected to appear before the Zeerust Magistrates’ Court this coming Friday for a formal bail application.
The Acting Provincial Commissioner of North West, Dintletse Molefe, has meanwhile applauded the police for the arrest and warned that “illicit cigarette trade affects the economy of the country and the police will deal harshly with those who perpetrate the crime”.
