Mpumalanga Education MEC Bonakele Majuba has announced that classes have been suspended at Witbank Technical High School in Emalahleni, in the wake of violent clashes between parents over alleged racism.

The South African reports the school was the scene of chaos on Monday 14 June 2021, as mainly black parents protested, accusing the school of unfairly targeting black learners – something which was sparked by a physical altercation between white and black learners in the previous week. It isn’t exactly clear what started the fight, but some media outlets have reported that the white pupil had used the k-word when referring to his black schoolmate.

It is understood that at least two learners – black and white - were suspended. However, only the white pupil was allowed to come to school and write examinations.

Violence ensued between black and white parents, with some of them using objects – including a hockey stick and baseball bat, to attack each other.

RACISM ALLEGATIONS AT WITBANK SCHOOL TO BE PROBED

Speaking to SABC News, Majuba said they were still looking into the matter and that in the meantime, classes at Witbank Technical High School would take a week-long break before resuming again on Monday 21 June.

“We have taken a decision that because of the situation we found in the school, that we have to suspend classes for a week and also to make sure that the team continues to investigate the problems which are alleged to have taken place in the school and make sure they are dealt with once and for all,” said Majuba.

MEC Majuba further told the public broadcaster that the investigation would include determining who the aggressors were in the initial fight and eventually determining an appropriate course of action.

“We also want to make sure that all the learners are given the opportunity to continue with the writing of their examinations. As of now, the two suspended learners will be allowed to write. Also, we want to further investigate whether they were the only ones who were supposed to be suspended,” he said.
