Twelve due in court over #HarrismithProtests─── KATLEHO MORAPELA 10:33 Thu, 17 Jun 2021
Seven suspects have been arrested in Harrismith in the Free State on Thursday morning following protests. This brings the number of suspects expected to appear in court today to 12 after five were arrested yesterday following the torching of a truck.
Police spokesperson, Motantsi Makhele, says they will all face charges of public violence. He, in a statement, says amongst those facing charges are minors who will be under supervision of their parents. He confirms the situation in and around Harrismith on the N3 is tense and there is a high police visibility. OFM News previously reported that protests in the area flared up last week with residents calling on president Cyril Ramaphosa to address the lack of service delivery in the Maluti-A-Phofung Municipality.
Some community members in Harrismith want the town to be removed from Maluti-A-Phofung due to poor service delivery.
Head of the Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Department (Cogta), Mokete Duma, previously said they have noted spiralling protests in the province and are attending to concerns raised by communities.
Addressing members of the Provincial Legislature over three weeks ago said they are working around the clock to settle the unrest in various municipalities.
