The municipal spokesperson, Willie Maphosa, says the offices, including that of the speaker, were forced to close due to a confirmed positive case of Covid-19. The offices have now been closed at least 5 times since the spread of Covid-19 in the country. The closure came as the country officially entered the third wave of Covid-19. On Wednesday night the province confirmed that a total of 917 new cases were identified in the last 24 hours.

The province has about 10 019 active cases. According to the health department, the total number of confirmed Covid-19 cases in the North West Province is 83 799 since the start of the pandemic, with 71 632 people having recovered from the coronavirus with an 85.5% recovery rate and 2 148 deaths.

The department also says 98 282 vaccines have been administered. It has also urged residents in the province to adhere to preventative measures of social distancing, sanitising, wearing a mask, avoiding crowded places, and not travelling unnecessarily.
