The case against a 53-year-old man, arrested in possession of illicit cigarettes worth over R4.8 million in the North West, is expected to resume in the Zeerust Magistrates’ Court on Friday.
Petrus Toppies was arrested on Tuesday 8 June at the Kopfontein Port of Entry following a search operation by the police.
OFM News earlier reported that the 53-year-old initially said he was transporting liquid molasses for cows, but upon investigation, it was discovered that there was also 355 master cases of Pacific Blue cigarettes.
Police spokesperson, Sam Tselanyane, said the driver was immediately arrested and the liquid molasses were drained out as it is not suitable for use in South Africa.
Tselanyane said the truck and cigarettes were confiscated. Toppies is expected in court for a bail hearing.
