CUT reacts to claims of deregistering students─── LUCKY NKUYANE 12:25 Thu, 17 Jun 2021
The Free State's Central University of Technology (CUT) has reacted to claims made by students about their financial difficulties experienced with the university.
The university’s spokesperson, Dan Maritz, says it’s reckless of students to make false claims in the media. Maritz says funded students know where the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) offices are that they should approach regarding their financial status. OFM News previously reported that students said they were deregistered in their numbers due to not being funded by the aid scheme despite having submitted supporting documents to relevant authorities.
One student who spoke to OFM News alleged that she was forced to take this painful decision due to non-payment of her allowances by NSFAS for three months, including March, April, and May. She said she was forced to deregister last week despite submitting supporting documents, such as a lease, which includes details of her rental amount, water and electricity bills, amongst others. She says she is now left with a university debt of R200 000.
Meanwhile, another student said she is also considering deregistering due to issues of non-payment of allowances. The university has recently been plagued by student protests over student allowances, amongst others.
