#ZamaZamas: Premier calls for integrated approach─── 07:52 Fri, 18 Jun 2021
North West Premier Job Mokgoro believes that an integrated approach in combating illegal mining is needed to achieve greater results.
Mokgoro visited China African Precious Metals' shaft in Orkney outside Klerksdorp on Thursday, following the incident where twenty dead bodies were found stashed in grain bags next to Ariston Road on Tuesday. Community Safety MEC Sello Lehari and acting provincial commissioner, Dintletse Molefe, accompanied Mokgoro on his inspection in the area.
In a statement, Mokgoro said the situation is uncalled for and thus calls for immediate action.
"The situation calls for drastic deliberate action that should happen almost immediately. I made it very clear that we have to strengthen our integrated approach towards dealing with illegal mining, our efforts must be more sustainable and long-lasting in terms of effectiveness," said Mokgoro.
Lehari says police are on high alert and investigations are ongoing.
Lehari says arrests are expected to be made soon as they have deployed police in hot-spot areas. He calls for residents to help the police with information to bring perpetrators to book.
OFM News has reported that residents in the area are concerned over the incident and calls for more to be done as they live in fear.
The minister of Mineral Resources, Gwede Mantashe, on Wednesday visited the area.
