Kopanong asks for Cogta's intervention─── LUCKY NKUYANE 10:06 Sun, 20 Jun 2021
The cash-strapped Trompsburg-based Kopanong Local Municipality in the Free State has sought the assistance of the Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) Department regarding its pension fund debacle.
This, as the South African Municipal Workers Union (Samwu) is seeking to freeze the municipality's account due to non-payment of municipal workers' third party contributions or pension fund.
The union has since dragged the municipality to the High Court.
The municipality's spokesperson, Solomzi Phama, previously told OFM News that if the municipality's account was to be frozen, it would have an adverse impact on service delivery.
The matter between Samwu and the municipality will be heard in the Free State High Court on 29 July for representation.
In February 2021, Samwu's provincial secretary, Tiisetso Mahlatsi, told OFM News that workers who were employed from 2012 were not registered with the provident fund - but that monies were deducted with no contribution made by the municipality.
