#ZamaZamas: 'We apologise'─── 07:26 Tue, 22 Jun 2021
Lesotho's Consul General, Selimo Thabane, says the incident where the bodies of illegal miners found dumped next to a road in Orkney in North West is shameful.
He adds the Lesotho government apologises that its people are a part of the burden that the South African government goes through due to illegal mining.
Thabane says they are ashamed that Lesotho nationals are operating as so-called zama-zamas in South Africa, which he says is risky on its own and is also a burden to South Africa.
Thabane called the situation unfortunate, adding they are apologising on behalf of the zama-zamas from their country.
"Our government is willing to engage with South African government to find solutions to this matter, I have heard of zama-zamas before, but this is bad to experience," said Thabane.
Meanwhile, North West Premier Job Mokgoro says it is estimated that government loses R14 billion per year due to this illegal mining.
