NC municipality to address service delivery─── KATLEHO MORAPELA 09:08 Tue, 22 Jun 2021
The Mayor and Municipal Manager of the troubled Joe Morolong Municipality in the Northern Cape have vowed to turn around the state of the municipality.
This, after they came under fire for poor service delivery and high unauthorised expenditures. The pair had to account before the Legislature's Standing Committee on Public Accounts and Finance on Monday.
The team, led by Speaker Newrene Klaaste, has embarked on a week-long oversight visit to different regions. They announced that it is in efforts to ensure accountability in municipalities and all spheres of government.
OFM News on Monday reported that the municipality's inability to provide adequate services to residents has been described as a cause of concern.
According to the Provincial Legislature, more needs to be done to ensure water provision to communities, to fill vacant positions, and to hold those who are liable for irregular expenditure, accountable.
It was revealed that the municipality is amongst Northern Cape municipalities that are battling to regenerate revenue and as a result grapples with service delivery.
Mayor Dineo Leutlwetse and her accounting officer both committed to ensuring that consequence management measures are implemented and that audit outcomes for the current financial year improves.
