Senior FS municipal members under fire─── 06:31 Wed, 23 Jun 2021
"Free State municipalities are suffering in part due to ignorant senior officials who spent public funds recklessly."
This is according to the Chairperson at the Public Accounts and Finance Committee in the Provincial Legislature, Vusi Tshabalala, during a virtual sitting. He said some officials fail to respect reports made by the Auditor-General, adding that - considering financial statements of the troubled Nala Municipality - this behaviour must come to an end.
In the virtual sitting regarding the state of municipal finances, the Nala Municipality's senior members were placed in the spotlight.
The committee noted with concern that the mayor did not implement oversight to ensure that the audit action plan process was effective to address performance reporting and compliance reported in the previous year. It was reported that Salga was asked to provide a capacity building workshop to the council on financial and audit matters, to enhance or improve the performance of the municipality.
All employees occupying senior positions without the necessary qualifications must be reviewed and the law must be applied.
One of the Members of the Provincial Legislature stated that a resolution audit plan was tabled in May and it had been approved.
