The Free State ANC’s Interim Provincial Committee (IPC) has spoken out against rumours of the imminent axing of four Free State MECs, dismissing the allegations as nothing more than “fake news”.

The IPC says this disturbing narrative is divisive and does nothing in helping the IPC’s cause and mandate. Former Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) MEC and current IPC spokesperson, Oupa Khoabane, tells OFM News the committee is not considering shuffling the Provincial Executive Council, contrary to the rumours that are out there. Khoabane gets into what the IPC’s current focus is.

Khoabane says at present what they are doing from an “aiding governance perspective” is to check that in all areas where ANC members are deployed, services are being rendered to citizens. The IPC is looking at ways in which they can strengthen the work that deployees are doing and assist where issues arise.

He says they have raised concerns around corruption with ANC members that are higher up the ranks in government and requested them to root out corruption when it is found. He says “where people are criminally charged in court, appropriate action should be taken to prove that we are serious on crime,” concludes Khoabane on the matter. This whilst questions are mounting as to whether former Mangaung Metro Mayor, Olly Mlamleli, has stepped away from the party pending corruption and money laundering charges levelled against her in the R255 million asbestos housing audit tender criminal case.

The IPC has a long list of issues that need urgent addressing, including shutdowns in Maluti-a-Phofung, Matjhabeng, and Mangaung Metropolitan Local Municipalities. The committee is also tasked with holding the party’s provincial elective conference, after the Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) in Bloemfontein declared the PEC elected in 2018 as “unlawful”. IPC Coordinator Paseka Nompondo, addressing media alongside the structure's Convener Mxolisi Dukwana and his deputy Sisi Ntombela on 3 June 2021, announced they will certainly uphold the programme of unity and renewal in their interactions with the different regions and all structures of the ANC.
