Schools close, FS Education makes an appeal | News Article

The Free State Education Department is appealing to educators and learners to continue adhering to lockdown level 4 regulations during school holidays.

Wednesday marks the end of term 2 with schools closing earlier, as announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa on Sunday. Ramaphosa announced that schools will close a week earlier and moved the country to level 4 in an effort to curb the spread of the Covid-19.

He confirmed the country is seeing a massive resurgence of infections with the Delta variant affecting five provinces so far, namely Gauteng, the Eastern Cape, the Free State, KwaZulu-Natal, and the Western Cape.

The spokesperson for the Free State Education Department, Howard Ndaba, says they would like to wish all teachers, learners, and support staff well during this break and encourage them to observe non-pharmaceutical interventions to prevent transmission.

“When we re-open on 19 July we don’t want any disruptions because on the 23rd of June, we began the rollout of vaccinations for teachers and support staff.”

He highlights the first round of the rollout programme has been completed with more than 16 000 educators and non-teaching staff vaccinated. He confirms the second round begins today, Wednesday.

OFM News has previously reported that a total of 32 000 education personnel in the province are expected to be vaccinated by July 8.
