Tributes are pouring in for the friends and family of Congress of the People (Cope) general secretary and former Free State Education MEC, Papi Diratsagae Kganare.
According to the party’s national spokesperson, Dennis Bloem, Kganare succumbed to Covid-19 this past weekend. The former Free State MEC is survived by his wife and children. His death has sent shock waves across the country with social media users expressing sadness over his death.
Free State current Education MEC Tate Makgoe says he has learnt with a heavy heart about the passing of Kganare and that it is a great loss to the province and the entire country. He describes him as someone who was passionate and focused on improving education.
"During his stint as Education MEC in the province, Kganare has shown a qualitative leadership. He was so passionate and focused on improving education. He was on the ground at schools making sure he had a sense of what education in the Free State looks like and he was always willing to listen to the people he was leading.
"As the political head of the department, Kganare steered the ship with zeal, making sure he supports struggling and underperforming schools by introducing the mentorship programme," said Makgoe.
He added that it was under Kganare's leadership that the province's annual matric 'Well Done Function' to acknowledge and recognise excellent performance in the NSC results was introduced in 1999.
OFM News has reported that COPE's Bloem said they are saddened by Kganare’s death and are at a great loss.
He described him as a selfless leader, who always placed the needs of others first and was dedicated to serving the country.
Bloem said Kganare was a founder member who built the party to what it is today and will be greatly missed.
