Delta variant concerns NC Health MEC─── 11:46 Tue, 06 Jul 2021
Northern Cape Health MEC Maruping Lekwene raised concerns regarding the Covid-19 Delta variant which has shaken the country amid its third wave.
Lekwene said that the Delta variant appears to spread faster than other variants. For this reason, Lekwene pleaded with people to follow Covid-19 protocols, which include face masks, social distancing, avoiding large gatherings and sanitising. Lekwene said indications are that the province is passing the peak of its third wave, as the province has showed a significant drop of 16% in hospital admissions last week.
He also stated that the number of new cases have dropped by 12% in the past week. The number of people infected in the past two weeks has also dropped from 8 200 to 6 600.
With the hope of accelerating the Covid-19 vaccination programme in the Northern Cape, Lekwene will be visiting various districts this month to monitor the vaccination rollout and support the health teams on the ground.
