The North West ANC’s Provincial Disciplinary Committee (PDC) will hold former North West Premier Supra Mahumapelo’s suspension re-hearing on Sunday 11 July.

Mahumapelo will, alongside the North West ANC Women’s League North West chairperson, Bitsa Lenkopane, defend themselves against allegations that they aimed to sow division in the party by holding a parallel rally to an “official” one by the Interim Provincial Committee (IPC) in December 2020 in Mareetsane Village near Mahikeng. The rally was held amidst by-elections at the Ratlou Local Municipality.

The re-hearing comes after the ANC’s National Disciplinary Committee (NDC) reverted the matter back to provincial level due to the matter not being properly addressed prior to being escalated to them.

In a document dated 25 June the NDC - chaired by Mildred Oliphant - is of the view that the matter was not properly “ventilated” at provincial level. The decision they say will now afford Mahumapelo and Lenkopane an opportunity to formally defend themselves in a re-hearing. They say this decision is in the interest of justice.

OFM News previously reported that Mahumapelo said in a briefing held at Delareyville town hall in Tswaing in April 2021, that he is not a monster. He maintained that he had been painted with a wrong brush, citing that even during the unrest in 2018 he was not consulted; not even to submit a report. Mahumapelo alleged in that briefing that at least R35 million was donated by business people to fund his downfall.

He and Lenkopane are also alleged to have told former JB Mark’s Mayor Kgotso Khumalo not to step down from his position as outlined in the party’s step aside resolution. Khumalo is facing criminal charges pertaining to defrauding the municipality of R5 million.
